Copy (Birthday) Cake

I love birthday cake! In my humble opinion, it is the pièce de résistance of any birthday celebration. My mom’s slice of birthday cake at BR Prime was absolutely gorgeous (and may I add delicious). But I also wanted her to enjoy birthday cake at home. So I decided to order a cake for her from Haydel’s Bakery. Haydel’s has designed many cakes for us over the years. Here’s a fancy banana split cake they made for me in the past. How fancy was it?

This was going to be a very informal get-together. I didn’t need anything elaborate, but I still wanted it to be special. So I perused the web to get inspiration, as to how I wanted the cake decorated. An assortment of beautifully decorated vintage Hollywood birthday cakes caught my eye. In particular, the two shown below.

What I love about these two cakes, is their simple white frosting and delicate floral design. The softness of the pink & green flowers (and also their arrangement) against the white frosting makes the cake very angelic and dreamy. My mom was born very close to Mother’s Day, so I thought the flowers scattered atop the cake would be a beautiful touch. I printed both designs, hopped in the car and headed to the bakery to place my order. Visuals are always helpful.

Haydel’s Bakery did an excellent job copying the design of the cake above. The piping was absolutely perfect! This was an almond cake with buttercream icing. It had a pineapple filling, which was delicious. My mom thought it was delightful. If I had to critique the cake, the only thing I could come up with is the shade of pink used for the flowers. I prefer the softer shade of pink, as shown in the picture. I did mention this when placing the order, but with everything going on in the world, that is the least of my worries. Also, if I had to do it again, I would leave the top of the cake plain. But most importantly, the cake was delicious, beautiful to look at and everyone enjoyed. Cheers to BIRTHDAY CAKE!
